Six social media myths debunked

Let’s talk about social media managers. Specifically, let’s talk about the myths people believe about what we do. Because, no, we don’t just post and scroll all day while sipping lattes. (Okay, maybe there’s a latte involved, but I swear there’s a lot more to it!)

Myth #1: "Anyone can do social media!"

Sure, anyone can do it - but should they?

Managing social media is about creating intentional content, engaging with an audience, analyzing data, and adjusting strategies—not just throwing up a random post and hoping for the best.

What I do as a social media manager: I create content with meaning and purpose. Every post is designed to connect with your audience, reinforce your brand voice, and drive engagement. There’s a strategy behind it all, even the fun stuff!

Myth #2: "You’ll go viral if you do it right!"

The goal of social media should be to build meaningful connections with your audience and your community and create consistent growth. A well-thought-out social media plan focuses on long-term engagement, not just one-hit wonders.

What I do as a social media manager: I focus on consistency, authenticity, and engagement. Going viral is great, but what’s even better? A loyal, engaged audience that actually converts into customers.

Myth #3: "More followers = more success."

It’s not about how many followers you have—it’s about the right followers. A smaller, engaged community is far more valuable than a massive audience that doesn’t care about your brand. (Plus, those “10K followers overnight” scams? Yeah, they’re fake bots that will disappear faster than my cat when I bring out the vacuum.)

What I do as a social media manager: I prioritize engagement, brand loyalty, and real connections. Because 500 engaged followers who love your brand are better than 5,000 who never interact.

Myth #4: "You should post 3 times a day for the best growth!"

Quality > quantity. Spamming your audience won’t make the algorithm love you. I mean that in the nicest way. However, if you feel you have the bandwidth to post 3x a day, please feel free to experiment. I always am saying this: every single social media page is different, so it’s better to do a trial & error test than to just say something works or doesn’t work.

Myth #5: "If a post flops, delete it immediately!"

The algorithm is weird, and sometimes a post that flopped today will pick up traction later. Plus, deleting posts messes with your analytics and stops you from learning what works and what doesn’t.

Keep the post up, review the insights, and tweak your approach for next time. You can always repurpose the content.

For example, if you posted it as a Carousel, try a Reel instead! Like I said, it’s all about experimentation.

Myth #6: "Logging out of the app after posting boosts your reach!"

Some people think the algorithm will “reward” you for not interacting with your own post…

Engagement immediately after posting is actually helpful! Responding to comments and interacting with others can increase your reach.

My suggestion? Stick around for at least 10-15 minutes after posting. Reply to comments and engage with your audience.

The bottom line is that social media is a wild place, and there’s no shortage of myths floating around. But the truth? Success isn’t about hacks or outdated “rules”—it’s about strategy, consistency, and actually connecting with your audience. Keep being social. Keep experimenting. If you have no idea where to start and you have the means to, hire a social media expert!
